How to Actually Find the Right Artist Online
Searching for art online can feel like searching for anything else. Too many results, not enough of them feel right.
Here's how I'd do it if I were starting from scratch.
Skip the big marketplaces first
Big art marketplaces are fine for browsing, but they're built for volume, not connection. You'll scroll through hundreds of pieces and feel nothing. Start somewhere smaller. Somewhere local.
Search by place before you search by style
Try searching for abstract artists in your own city before you search by style or color. A local artist means you can see the work in person, ask questions, and actually build a relationship with the person who made it. That relationship matters more than people expect until they have it.
Instagram tells you more than a website does
A website shows you the finished paintings. Instagram shows you the process. The studio. The hands doing the work. If you want to know whether an artist's work will actually feel right in your home, watching how they create it tells you almost everything.
Ask about the story behind the piece
Every painting comes from somewhere. A walk on the Strand. A quiet morning. A specific kind of light. When you know the story, the painting means more on your wall. Don't be afraid to ask the artist directly. Most of us love talking about it.
Trust the piece that stops your scroll
You'll know it when you see it. The painting that makes you stop scrolling and look twice is usually the one that belongs in your home. Don't overthink it past that point.
Some paintings just want to be lived with.
